Most firms spend a lot
of time creating a catchy mission and vision
statement. We’ve taken a slightly
different approach. Below we describe
what we see as the distributed energy resource
(DER) business opportunity for suppliers
and buyers of energy. We
also describe the value that we bring to
buyers and suppliers of energy in the DER
market place.

|
Utility planners and
energy policy makers agree that distributed
generation – small power generating
facilities placed nearer to customer loads – provide
plenty of benefits. They make transmission
and distribution systems more efficient,
they make systems more reliable, and they
avoid the wasting of capital spent on large
power plants in anticipation of load growth. When
placed at the load at customer facilities,
they provide added benefits to the customer – lower
and more stable energy costs, the opportunity
to achieve higher reliability in their power
supplies, and through cogeneration, the more
efficient use of fuel, which creates environmental
benefits.
So with these clear economic, engineering and environmental benefits, why isn’t
distributed generation more prevalent? The simple answer is that developing
a DER system is complex – coping with government regulations, utility contracts,
fuel supplies, and project financing are just some of the hurdles a company faces
when they choose to install a DER unit.

Distributed Energy Strategies,
Inc. is a collection of experts and consultants
that help both the buyers and sellers of
DER deal with the complexities of the industry. We’ve
created two groups – The DES Seller’s
Alliance™, and the DES Buyer’s
Alliance™ - and we provide each with
essential services. We connect buyers
with sellers, and sellers with buyers, and
do it in a way driven by buyer’s needs
and preferences. Buyers no longer have
to compromise to conform with their provider’s
preferences, and sellers no longer need to
waste their valuable resources pursuing inappropriate
applications for their technology and services.

For
Sellers...
The Problem – Ongoing
legislative and regulatory proceedings, industry
working groups, the complexities of marketing
and developing projects, and widely varying customers’ needs
and desires can overwhelm a DER-related business. Yet,
these tasks are essential to a successful business. The
demands of the DER business can cause many companies
to spread their resources too thinly, diverting
their attention and efforts from what they do
best.
The Solution – By joining the DES Supplier’s
Alliance™, a company can avail itself of DES’ skills and resources
at a fraction of the cost of sustaining the same capabilities in-house. Alliance
members have access to government affairs support, project development support,
access to goods and services from other alliance members, and perhaps most
importantly, better access to the markets for DER through the DES Buyer’s
Alliance.
For Buyers...
The Problem – DER
systems offer significant economic and reliability benefits for their users. Power
generation equipment installed on-site at a user’s facilities can provide
power cost savings and stabilization, and, depending on the configuration
of the project, power quality and reliability benefits.
But developing a DER project is highly complex – few users have the
in-house capability to see a project through from inception to completion – and
few derive comfort from consultants or vendors with the objective of selling
them a specific type or brand of equipment. Faced with this confusion and suspicion,
many potential DER buyers never “pull the trigger” on their projects.
The Solution – Potential
users of DER can join the DES Buyer’s
Alliance. For
alliance members, DES acts as the buyer’s agent,
completely free of biases or incentives. DES will approach a project in
a way, and employ a business model that reflects the buyer’s expressed
needs and desires – the buyer defines how, and how deeply they wish to
be involved. We’ll perform objective project assessments, and define
the “best fit” technologies for the buyer’s situation. We’ll
give buyers access to best available pricing through our DES Supplier’s
Alliance, or, if our
supplier members don’t meet their needs, we’ll locate and acquire
the appropriate equipment and prices. We’ll finance the project, if the
buyer wants, and even assume the role of owner-operator.
In short, we do projects the way buyers want them done – objectively,
free of equipment bias, and with a business model and financial approach that
meets the buyer’s needs first.
